Mobs and bosses will spawn fel explosives which upon finishing their 6s cast explode for up to 2.5M damage to the whole party. They take highest priority and need to be killed off fast. They are in the same class as totems so AoE abilities like TC and target macros don’t work on them. You need to click their nameplate/model and hit them with a single target ability. Fortunately they have 100k-400k HP so it takes only a couple of hits.
Tips and Tricks for the Explosive Affix
A prerequisite for dealing with this affix is
Targeting the Fel Explosives
Which you can do in one of two ways
You press the tab button and hope and pray that the game decides to target the fel explosive and not an out of combat mob 40 yards behind you on the upper floor (if you are reading this from an alternate reality where tab targeting was never broken, you will not get this joke).
In all honestly as of patch 7.2 this works mostly fine. If you are fighting a pack of up to 3 mobs you can get away with tabbing your way to the fel explosive and killing it well before it is close to exploding.
You left click the model or the nameplate of the fel explosive. Again with up to 3 mobs (Explosive being the 4th target) this is quite easy. There aren’t too many cluttered enemies, projectiles or other visuals that would obscure your vision. At 4+ mobs, where you might be getting 2 fel explosives spawn at the same time is where things start to get tricky.
You need a good nameplate addon at this point to be able to quickly identify and switch to an exploding orb. While you could get away using the standard blizzard UI, two good alternatives are Tidy Plates and KUI.
Killing off the Fel Explosives
Hopefully, the DDs of the party will be able to take care of most of the orbs. However, due to various circumstances this will not always be possible. As prot warriors, we do not have many options to quickly finish off orbs.
If you switch to the orb ASAP, you should be able to pull off 3 auto attacks with devastator within the 6s window. Realistically, the orb should be dead after the 2nd swing.
